I thought this blog post on the Harvard Business Review website was thought-provoking:
A Better Way to Manage Knowledge (Jan. 19/10) by John Hagel III and John Seely Brown of Deloitte LLP Center for the Edge. It talks about knowledge management compared to fostering collaborative learning environments in the workplace they call creation spaces. They fault KM with focussing on past knowledge, whereas organizations should be looking to create new knowledge. This, they point out, is the reason why it is difficult to have knowledge workers submit contributions to a KM system. They make some good points, but personally, I have always thought the person-to-person contact and creation of learning environments to be part of the whole KM vision. They clearly differentiate it.
